"Colorful to the End" Raffle quilt

Members of the Museum Quilt Guild in Batavia, NY are busy creating their quilts for display at the Museum Quilt Guild Quilt Show “Stitches in Time” for 2012. The show will be held Friday, October 19 and Saturday, October 20, 2012. The show has a new location. Alexander Firemen’s Recreation Hall on Rte 98 in Alexander, NY will be the site of the show this year. Easily accessible from points North, South, East and West, the Rec. Hall is located about 9 miles south of Batavia, NY. We will post directions as the date nears.

Traditionally our show contains over 200 quilts ranging in size from a small wall hanging to a large bed quilt in a variety of designs, plus home decor items and wearable art. Some of the quilts are hand pieced or hand quilted while others are completely machine-pieced and quilted. Some are original designs created by their makers while others are constructed from a commercial pattern. Whatever the design or technique, each is considered a work of art. The artistry starts with the fabric and design selection. If you can't wait to see what we do, pictures of the 2010 show are available here

Along with the quilt display, there will also be a silent auction and boutique with items for sale that have been made by our members. Raffle basket and door prizes will also be awarded. Several vendors will be on hand to provide their quilt-related wares. You can also buy a chance to win the quilt pictured above!

At the January 21 meeting, 21members of the Guild presented 23 quilts for this year's challenge. The them , chosen by Kathi Everett, was "Carnival". It was interpreted in many ways!
Numbers are for members to use in voting for prizes, which will be awarded at the February meeting.

Quilt # 13: Mary Lu Hodgins was inspired by a trip to New Orleans. It's always a party on Bourbon Street! The white label in the corner is still visible on houses left empty after Katrina.

Quilt # 22: Melanie Watson hand stitched fireworks in the background of her Mardi Gras celebration.

Quilt # 12: Bethany Anderson was inspired by Zoltan the fortune teller. The hands and face were made with "Model Magic"

Quilt # 23: Mary Kozub used a piece of fabric she snow-dyed for the background of her carousel horse.

November's meeting left me wanting to go home and sew this month. We had a GREAT show and tell. The line went on and on. I wonder why so many people have finished projects all of a sudden?

The Museum Quilt Guild is happy to be welcoming Anita Grossman Soloman, who will be visiting us in October. While she's here, we'll be able to enjoy the benefit of her "Make It Simpler" style of quilting!

On Thursday, October 13, she will be teaching her "Xcentric" Block class.

On Friday, October 14, it will be the "Self Mitered Log Cabin".

The Museum Quilt Guild is proud that two of our members were honored for their work at the recent "Diamond Jubilee" quilt festival!!!

Congratulations to our own Kathi Everett, winner of the Iron Quilter Challenge at the Genesee Valley Quilt Club Quilt Show on Saturday June 4, 2011. Twenty people found out the themes at 10 AM that morning and 3 1/2 hours later had constructed a quilt to be judged and auctioned off to the highest bidders. Kathi's quilt, based on the theme "The Diet" was chosen grand winner. For that, she was awarded a new Bernina sewing machine.

Also, Mary Kozub of our guild was a 3rd place winner in the art quilt category with her quilt...."All State".

Congratulations, Kathi &; Mary, we are ALL very proud of you!

Donna was missed at our monthly guild meeting this month. Take care and thinking of you Madam President! Elaine did a great job running the meeting as my (Kathi's) co-chair. I am not a fan of that dang microphone~!

We had a wonderful holiday party with plenty of delicious food and some great gifts in our 2nd annual gift exchange. I made this...and Mary Ann Watson chose it, so now it has a good home!

Wenda Coburn was our guest speaker telling us about her Just...Sew program with inmates in the Onondaga County Jail. It was a fascinating lecture and we thank her.

Chris Kuehl led a group of us in a workshop after the meeting. We learned how to do her raggedy applique pillow technique. Many of us either finished the pillow in class or immediately after! Thank you Chris.

Our Quilt Show is around the corner! It promises to be a year of awesome changes and opportunity. Let's all support the production and be inspired by a great group of creative women and one terrific male!

Quilt Show Information

The quilt show is only 7 weeks away! You have until Sept 4th to register your quilts. Forms are available in the July newsletter, or you may use the super easy online form. Remember you can always show less than you register, but you may NOT show quilts that are not registered!

If you haven't signed up for classes with George Siciliano, now is the time to do so! Information on the classes can be found here. Bring a friend! Contact Elaine Ross: elainejr@rochester.rr.com to sign up.
Parking is limited at St Anthony's so we are working on a shuttle service to allow you to park at the Presbyterian church. If you can help with that, please contact Cathy Judkins.
If you are unfamiliar with the area, St Anthony's is at 114 Liberty St. Liberty Street turns off of Main St at the corner where the Pennysaver has moved. The Presbyterian church and the Key Bank are also located at this intersection. Follow Liberty across Ellicott. St Anthony's is the second building on the right. From the West, bear right off of Main St onto Ellicott ( Route 63). Turn right onto Liberty Street at the third light. St Anthony's is the second building on the right.
There are still openings for all shifts at the show, especially hostesses. Remember, working a shift means you get in to the show for free! Being a hostess allows you to spend a lot of time looking at the quilts, and the vendor stalls, plus you get to chat with fellow quilters from all around the area!
If you are going out shopping, contact Martha for some fliers or bookmarks to help promote the show!

Art quilters update

As you may know, a few of us have been getting together to explore contemporary quilting the last couple of years. We have finally decided to call ourselves the "Art C Girlz".

We are currently displaying a collection of our works at the GOArt! Satellite gallery at the Senior Center, 2 Bank Street, Batavia. The exhibit will be up until the end of August. The gallery is open Monday through Friday from 9 am- 4 pm. Contact GOArt for more information at www.goart.org, or 585-343-9313.

The picture above is a piece we all worked on together called "Convolvulous", which is the name of the flower. Below is a sample of what else you can enjoy if you go to the gallery.

This past Saturday a group gathered at Tracy J's (thanks Tracy & Dan) business' cafeteria to participate in a Fabric Painting Workshop given by Barb Murak. Many painting techniques were covered and much time dedicated to play. Barb was a very gracious and knowledgeable teacher. I know all of us were inspired and motivated to make beautiful fabric!

Linda Hunter was our speaker this month. We all learned alot about quilt show judging. Linda has been a judge and been judged! Her lecture was very informative.

Next month Janet Root will be back to go over the many "basics" of quilting. Many of you have expressed interest in learning about squaring up, 1/4" seam, binding etc. Janet is known for her meticulous attention to these details.

July is our annual picnic (potluck style). We will also set up tables upstairs for a summertime flea market. It's a lot easier to transport all your cast-offs in nice weather, so bring your priced items and make some $$!

August will bring Ina Randall. She is a member of Amherst Quilt guild. I actually hunted her down at their quilt show last month to book her for a trunk show! You will be inspired by her work.

Create something wonderful to share with us next month!

After a rocky start to our April meeting we managed to quickly regroup and enjoyed a trunk show from Janet Root!

Our Liberated Quilt workshop after was wonderful. I will post pics of our time with Janet in a few days.

We welcome Linda Hunter in May. She will be telling us the things that quilt show judges look for.

In June Janet Root will be returning to take us through all the basics of quilting. Many people expressed interest in learning/reviewing just that, so plan on learning something new or refreshing our busy minds with tips that will help make quilting enjoyable!

Remember July we will have our annual picnic and we are adding a flea market. We know January weather is not conducive to transporting our treasures! Start setting things aside now, price them and you'll be ahead of the game!

In case you hadn't heard, Sharon Larson has arranged for us to have George and Virginia Siciliano visit us during the quilt show on October 15th and 16th!!!
George and his wife are from Lebanon, PA and are both award winning quilt makers. George was appearing at one of the vendor booths in Lancaster and these are pictures of some of his quilts.

Workshop 9-4 on Oct. 15, "Size Really Does Matter," a miniature quilt workshop, all skill levels. $50 for guild members; $55 for non-members.

Lecture, 7 p.m. Oct. 15, "This Guy Must Be Nuts," humorous trunk show presentation. Admission $5.

Workshop 9-4 Oct. 16, "Twirling Logs," all skill levels, not a miniature quilt block but second in the "Amazing Log Cabin Variations" series. $50 for guild members; $55 for non-members.

Guild members can sign up any time for workshops. Workshops open to all after our July guild meeting.
