Demo Day!

 Several people mentioned to me that demo day is their favorite!    I wish we could do  it more often myself!

We had a few show and tell items before we got to the demos today.

                               Nancy Ellers made these house blocks as part of a group project.

                                                 When Nancy can't sleep, she crochets baby blankets!

Mary Kozub is trying to use up a pile of 3/4 inch strips she found in her sewing room. Project #1 was this pretty table topper (sorry the colors are dull- it's really very pretty!)

                               Project #2 is this beautiful woven rug- made on Mary's rigid heddle loom.

Patty Baxter finished a UFO!  This is an old one, made when she was learning to quilt!

Donna Tomski finally finished this pineapple quilt- a wall hanging she will keep.  Several people remembered seeing these blocks at retreats.  The blocks are 4-1/2"- and were NOT paper pieced.  Mary Lowe quilted it for Donna.  

Elaine Lemley picked the pattern for this gift for her grandson up off the free table.  She took it on a retreat, determined to get it finished before the weekend was over.  The appliqué gave her some trouble, but she made it!  The pattern is available again if anyone wants it.  

 

Alex Hammon showed us a sweet bag she made at a class (sorry I didn't get a picture!!)

Alex also sent in a picture of the rollater  bag installed for her mom to use! (we saw it in progress last month)

THANKS to the members who did our demos!

Unfortunately Val Schultz was unable to make it  to do her demo.  However, she did provide us with some instructions! (thanks, Val!)  Val's wonky Log Cabin demo was inspired by a quilt she shared with us earlier this year. 

Sue Chiddy shared some tips on English paper piecing - for anyone who was inspired to try it after last month's program!

Mary Ellen Ames and Elaine Ross gave us some tips on registering and preparing our quilts for the quilt show!  (If you aren't sure when you register, please contact one of them!)

Martha Shared how to make "Opulent Ornaments" using instructions by Paula Nadelstern.

Ami Simms has also done these, and offered some nice tips and links to supplies she used, including Cartwright Sequins- a place where going overboard seems way too easy.     Martha had prepared a slideshow with pictures f the ornaments she has on display at her home.  Several people asked that it be shared here, so here you go.

There was some interest in a workshop as well.  I am considering it, and will let you all know soon if and when.

June Block of the Month

 I can't believe I forgot to do this!  (I crossed "blog post" off my list after after the last post, you see)

For the June block swap, I chose this cute little block. 

As written, the pattern makes 4- 41/2 inch blocks. I figured each participant will submit all 4 for the swap, giving the winner a nice supply of blocks to play with!  Directions are here:

She shows both layers of the corner triangles being trimmed. I am not perfect with those little corners, so I always leave the bottom layer untrimmed, as shown here.  Up to you!

Another Amazing Trunk Show!

 Thanks to suggestions from members, we are discovering we don't have to travel very far away to find  amazing quilt artists!  Sue Chiddy introduced us to Sarah Ballinger, from Castile, NY this month- such a treat!

Of course, before we enjoy the guest speaker, we get to enjoy the talents of our own members.

                    Alex made a cart bag for her mom, missing Mother's Day by just a little.  :-)

Nancy Ellers won the block swap last month and made this quilt for Community Service.  She set them this way to give some movement to the butterflies

                 Nancy recovered a tote she carries to her cardiologist with this EKG fabric

Another member donated some yarn to Nancy, which she turned into small afghans for All Babies Cherished

Sue Russell made this beautiful pineapple (Hawaiian Hospitality) quilt- which was quilted by Mary Lowe.

Speaking of Mary Lowe, she quilted these quilts for Community Service. The black and white was pieced by Ann Renica.

I think Vinnie Thjung pieced one of these, but I forget which, and missed who pieced the other one.  

Kathi Everett used topless mermaid fabrics by Tula Pink to make this for her granddaughter Gracie.  Mary Lowe also quilted this one.  

 Tracy Jachimowicz pieced this star in 2020- when , she said, we all went to our sewing rooms- so it counts as a finished  UFO now!

Tracy made this for the Silent Auction at the quilt show (Seasonal items are the big sellers, if you're making something to donate)

Donna Sofokles has been busy...  This little piece is called "Things that go bump in the night"

Eula Serrino made this for the raffle to be held at her family reunion this summer.  There was a cute story about the outhouses, and the white squares in the border have toilet paper on them.  She calls this "Where Friends and Family meet"

                           Liz Scott is ready for the summer holidays with these table runners.

 

Connie Grimsley is getting the quilts for her students finished up.  The children told her their favorite colors earlier in the year, but didn't know why. 

                                            Orange and pink- never pink and orange!

                                           This one specified rainbow but no pink and purple.

Jennifer Grimsley found most of the tumbler shapes in the scrap bin at her Syracuse guild's fabric sale last summer. Jen also pieced the quilt below.  Both were quilted by Val Schultz and are for "Sleep in Heavenly Peace"

Elaine Lemley added to yarn given to her by Alex Hammon to make this  rug, for the Silent Auction.

Here we see some of the work Sarah Ballinger brought to share with us- as you can see she brings an actual trunk, and does a miniature "bed turning" of doll quilts she has made.  The bed is her cat's (One assumes he didn't mind her borrowing it for the day)

Sarah's work spans a range between very traditional "Hexie" projects, to amazing art! 

 

This is one of Sarah's "temperature quilts"- colors based on the day's weather.  

I couldn't get a picture of everything as I was helping Sarah.  If you're interested in hexies, the Quilter's Daughter in Perry Center has a Hexie Club, which Sarah sort of founded.
