Our annual Community Service Day returned to national Quilting Day this year, which seems very appropriate. The quilting community is a very generous bunch. We make quilts because we love to do it, and being able to give to those in need allows us to use our talents for a good cause.
Before we got to work, there was he usual display of that talent in Show and Tell!
Nancy Ellers put her time on vacation to good use.
Nancy made this for her dad quite a few years ago, and is happy to have it back now that he is downsizing. |
Lori Anderson was happy to show this off after getting it back from member and Long arm quilter Cathy Schmeider. |
(Sorry the picture of the quilting from the back didn't come out clear enough to share)
Alex made this little wallet- using a pattern from last year's "Diva wallet" class- as a gift for her cousin.
Connie Grimsley found this quilt top at a resale shop, and couldn't bear to leave it. So she finished it for Community Service.
Eileen Sorochty did the quilting on this Community Service quilt, using the motifs in the fabric as her guide.
Table mats made with UFO blocks Eileen found in her stash. |
Eileen made this to donate to the roco6x6.org sale to benefit the Contemporary art center. She used a mylar coffee bag as her base.
Eileen recently joined RAFA and enjoyed trying silk fusion.
Jennifer Grimsley is using some of the motifs in fabric she got on her Alaska trip to make postcards.
Jenny has many UFOs and has made some project bags to store them in. The pattern was found on a recent post from Joan Ford.
Jenny finished piecing this UFO at the retreat last month. She would only say she started it "Pre- 2008"
Mary Lowe donated this beautiful quilt to Community Service.
With great anticipation, the members in attendance welcomed Mary Kozub's announcement of the theme for the next challenge. If you weren't there, the theme is:
Modern Solids
Quilts must use only solid fabrics and the design should have a contemporary/ modern aesthetic. Mary chose this based on the fact that we have enjoyed recent lectures on the topic of modern quilting, and is hopeful traditional and art quilters will all be able to participate. This is Mary's last challenge, so let's not disappoint her!
Connie, Vinnie and Jenny were well organized and had kits assembled and supplies at the ready to keep everyone busy!
An estimated 28 kits were assembled with backing, batting and tops to be distributed to members for quilting. Connie had previously announced they had 80 tops in the stash, so please consider taking one next time you're at a meeting. Let Connie or Vinnie know you want one so they're sure to have enough!
A few stacks of blocks like this...
...were turned into quilts like this....
....Or this!
Everyone who stayed to work (and a couple who couldn't) brought food to share at lunch time- a delicious assortment of soups, salads, quiche, breads and desserts!
Thanks to the work of the members who worked this day, there are now a nice stack of finished quilts ready to be donated in our community.
If you know of a need, please let Connie or Vinnie know.
Thanks to all who help throughout the year!!!
Our next meeting is a week early, due to the Easter holiday. Karen Sienk will present a lecture and workshop on thread painting.
